World Book Day 2025

Wow! What a fun filled amazing day we all had celebrating World Book Day this week. There was much excitement across the playground as the children arrived in their costumes and pyjamas, carefully carrying their masterpieces to enter our ‘Book Character Spoon Competition’ and all ready for a jam-packed day of reading celebrations. The day started with a whole school assembly where we learnt about this year’s World Book Day theme of ‘Read Your Way’ and shared our favourite places to read. Throughout the day, each year group explored an ‘Amazing Author’ to inspire a love of reading. Reception went on a journey with Julia Donaldson; learning all about how she became an author, listening to some of her amazing stories and even some of her songs! The children chose their favourite Julia Donaldson book, made potions like in Room on the Broom, designed shells from Sharing a Shell and made themselves into a ‘merperson’ from The Singing Mermaid! Year 1 dived into the world of Rachel Bright, learning all about how she became an author and listening to her stories like The Koala Who Could. The children took on Rachel Bright’s challenge of creating a new animal character for her next story. We had, The Elephant on a train, The Snake who couldn’t hiss and Tiger on an Island. Finally, Year 2 delved into the world of Tom Fletcher listening to his stories and learning all about how he was in a famous band before becoming a children’s author. The children completed Tom’s challenge of creating a new ‘Who’s in your book’ character. We had a chameleon who kept changing the colour of the books pages and a ferocious tiger who tore up the pages!

As well as all the fun classroom activities, we also buddied up with WJS to create three ‘Stories Through the Years’. Reception wrote the first paragraph and passed it on to Year 1, then Year 2  and on to Year 3, all the way to Year 6! It was certainly interesting to read the final stories! We also had a ‘Cosy Federation Read’ where we shared our favourite books with a buddy class from WJS. The children were able to share their books with each other and read in comfortable places across both schools (including outside in the glorious sunshine!) Finally, we held our ‘Spoon Character Competition’. We were all blown away by the amazing, creative entries but the School Council with a few staff members had the very difficult job of deciding the winners! We were excited to share all of the creations at the end of the day, when they were presented on the playground. We hope the children enjoyed the day as much as we did and want to thank everyone for their amazing costume efforts, what a wonderful day to remember!
