Year 2 Ball Skills Sporting Event
Thu 24 Apr 2025Yesterday afternoon ten enthusiastic, eager and excited Year 2 children arrived at Calthorpe Park Secondary School to participate in a round robin style ball-skills event. This included six different activities focussing on throwing, catching and dribbling skills using a ball. A firm favourite was ‘Catch the Ball’ where the children had to catch the ball thrown through a hoop. WIS children decided to make the game more challenging by stepping back with the hoop to create a longer distance!
It was a fantastic event and the children absolutely loved participating in this extended curriculum opportunity. Their behaviour was exemplary, and we were so proud of them all.

World Earth Day 2025
Tue 22 Apr 2025Today we celebrated World Earth Day 2025 and in true Westfields style the staff and children threw themselves into the various activities that had been planned for this important extended curriculum opportunity. Starting with a whole school assembly to explore this years theme ‘Our Power, Our Planet’, discussions were had about renewable energy sources, recycling and the small changes we can all make to make a big difference! Each class then held their own debates and wrote their own pledges about what they wanted to do in their classrooms to make a difference. This afternoon was a hive of
eco-friendly activity as Year R explored hydropower (water power) in our outdoors areas. Year 1 were immersed in testing wind power with their wind spinners, whilst Year 2 explored the benefits of bio fuel and the importance of responsible recycling. Each class also spent some time planting bulbs or vegetables with Mrs Green; we are all keeping our green fingers crossed that the fruits of their labour will hopefully be seen over the coming weeks! Thank you also to all of the children and parents who supported our World Earth Day Easter Challenge. It has been wonderful to see and hear about so many adventures and activities that have taken place. As mentioned on the letter certificates and prizes will be awarded shortly to those who took part.

Year R Duckling Update and Fond Farewell
Fri 28 Mar 2025It has been another exciting week in Year R with our resident ducklings. Having spent the weekend at Mrs Wilson’s house they returned to school on Monday and we couldn’t believe how much they’d grown! Each class has enjoyed time with them in their classrooms, stroking them, watching them eating and drinking and even having a bath. They have grown so much and would have normally gone back to the farm at the end of this week however, luckily for us Mrs Green (AKA Mother Goose!) has adopted all five of them adding to her growing chicken and duck family. This means that we will have regular updates and photos and maybe even a visit from one when it’s all grown up.

KS1 Yateley Girls Cricket Assembly
Tue 25 Mar 2025This afternoon our KS1 children were presented with an exciting assembly! Rachel from Yateley Cricket Club came in to visit us and spoke to the children about this amazing sport. She explained how to play cricket and demonstrated using equipment including: stumps, a bat and a special ball. Some children even participated in a fun warm-up game and we all cheered them on! We are looking forward to our cricket taster sessions next half-term and practising various skills, including working together as a team.

Year R Welcome some new friends...
Fri 21 Mar 2025Year R have had the most eggciting week, with their very special delivery from Incredible Eggs!
On Monday morning five duck eggs were delivered in their
incubator. We were told that we would have to wait until Wednesday or
Thursday to meet our ducklings however, we could not believe it when the first duckling started pipping almost straight away. This was quickly followed by a further two eggs cracking! Overnight on Wednesday our fourth duckling hatched and at 8.00am on Thursday, the final duckling was welcomed into their family. They have all been added to the brooding box and are having plenty of snuggly cuddles! We are very excited for them to grow and look forward to having the opportunity to stroke them and greet them properly next week! The children have been able to see the miracle of a new life being born and it has been a rather magical experience to share with them.
We cannot wait to see how our new fluffy friends change over the next few days!

Science Week
Fri 14 Mar 2025We have had a fantastic time this week taking part in British Science Week. We started by finding out what makes a super scientist in a special assembly. We then spent some of our learning time designing a poster around the theme of “Change and Adapt” for a competition.
On Tuesday, we all enjoyed our Science Federation Afternoon where each of our classes worked with a class from the Juniors on an activity. Year R worked with Year 5 to create their own animal to survive in a specific environment. The Year 1s worked with Year 4 children to explore “Amazing Animal Adaptations”, completing a matching activity and researching their own animals. Year 2 went over to the Junior School to investigate how coins have changed over time using magnets; they certainly had great fun
discovering things around the classroom that were magnetic too!
During the rest of the week, the children have been given various opportunities to explore a variety of activities around the theme of “Change and Adapt”, including a Mystery Baby Photo Quiz where children had to be detectives to try and work out which adults that work in our school are pictured as babies.
The whole Federation was also challenged to create a human graph,
investigating the average height of a child in their class and then creating a life-sized cut out to demonstrate how children at Westfields Federation grow from Year R to Year 6.
It has been a super Science Week and we hope it has inspired some scientists of the future!

Fri 14 Mar 2025This week all of our children had the opportunity to take part in additional fun and engaging physical games during break and lunch times provided by Luke Wilton Sports (an external coach). This included practising football skills, working collaboratively, and developing resilience, all whilst having fun! The children were incredibly enthused to inform their teachers about new games they had played, and it was a great opportunity to meet new friends and learn different activities to play during recreational times during their school days.

World Book Day 2025
Thu 06 Mar 2025Wow! What a fun filled amazing day we all had celebrating World Book Day this week. There was much excitement across the playground as the children arrived in their costumes and pyjamas, carefully carrying their masterpieces to enter our ‘Book Character Spoon Competition’ and all ready for a jam-packed day of reading celebrations. The day started with a whole school assembly where we learnt about this year’s World Book Day theme of ‘Read Your Way’ and shared our favourite places to read. Throughout the day, each year group explored an ‘Amazing Author’ to inspire a love of reading. Reception went on a journey with Julia Donaldson; learning all about how she became an author, listening to some of her amazing stories and even some of her songs! The children chose their favourite Julia Donaldson book, made potions like in Room on the Broom, designed shells from Sharing a Shell and made themselves into a ‘merperson’ from The Singing Mermaid! Year 1 dived into the world of Rachel Bright, learning all about how she became an author and listening to her stories like The Koala Who Could. The children took on Rachel Bright’s challenge of creating a new animal character for her next story. We had, The Elephant on a train, The Snake who couldn’t hiss and Tiger on an Island. Finally, Year 2 delved into the world of Tom Fletcher listening to his stories and learning all about how he was in a famous band before becoming a children’s author. The children completed Tom’s challenge of creating a new ‘Who’s in your book’ character. We had a chameleon who kept changing the colour of the books pages and a ferocious tiger who tore up the pages!
As well as all the fun classroom activities, we also buddied up with WJS to create three ‘Stories Through the Years’. Reception wrote the first paragraph and passed it on to Year 1, then Year 2 and on to Year 3, all the way to Year 6! It was certainly interesting to read the final stories! We also had a ‘Cosy Federation Read’ where we shared our favourite books with a buddy class from WJS. The children were able to share their books with each other and read in comfortable places across both schools (including outside in the glorious sunshine!) Finally, we held our ‘Spoon Character Competition’. We were all blown away by the amazing, creative entries but the School Council with a few staff members had the very difficult job of deciding the winners! We were excited to share all of the creations at the end of the day, when they were presented on the playground. We hope the children enjoyed the day as much as we did and want to thank everyone for their amazing costume efforts, what a wonderful day to remember!

Well Being Week
Fri 14 Feb 2025This week has been 'Well Being Week' and we have had some fun in our classes working hard to ensure we feel good about ourselves. We have enjoyed relaxing with colouring, yoga and mindfulness. We have also spread positivity to others by doing 'good deeds' for other people to improve the well being of others. Some examples have included opening doors, giving
compliments and sharing smiles!
As part of Wellbeing Week, on Thursday afternoon our KS1 children took part in exciting, fun physical activities with the WJS Team Captains! A variety of games were played including 'Blob Tag' and 'Rock, Paper Scissors' with a twist! The children had great fun learning new active games to play whilst being led by the Year 6 children. It was a great opportunity to promote being active and having fun whilst doing so!

Safer Internet Day 2025
Tue 11 Feb 2025Today all of the children participated in celebrating Safer Internet Day, learning all about how to stay safe online. We started the fun with a special assembly introducing this year’s theme ‘Too Good to be True!’ The children were introduced to what online scams are, what they look like and discussed ways people can try to ‘trick’ us online with offers that seem ‘Too Good to be True!” Following this, throughout the day the children listened to stories and scenarios and had to decide if they thought something was a scam or not. They also learnt what personal information was and what information is/is not okay to share with others online. Year 1 took part in an e-safety Now Press Play immersive experience where the character clicked on a pop up and ended up being sucked into the computer game! They had to work out what was a scam or not to make it out of the game to get back home. Badger Class even took part in a national live Now Press Play session with over 70 other schools! Each of our Year 2 classes even had the opportunity to visit Westfields Junior School to work with Year 5 and learn how to alter images and identify alterations. This supported their understanding that not everything you see online is real. Throughout the day we all reminded ourselves about the important message of talking with a trusted adult if we have something pop up on our screen or we are worried about anything we see or hear online, whilst having fun! Such a great extended curriculum opportunity with an important safety message.
