At Westfields Infant school we aim to encourage a love of reading in all children. We endeavour to develop confident readers who enjoy talking about books and ask questions about what they have read. We believe success in reading has a direct effect upon progress in all other areas of the curriculum. Whilst reading children are encouraged to respond to what they’ve read saying what they like or do not like and discuss feelings and emotions drawing parallels with those expressed in books. We ensure children have the opportunity to read a wide range of books from variety of different genres and a wide range of authors.

Reading is linked with both speaking and listening and writing skills and we teach all of these skills in a way that makes them dependent upon each other. We immerse children in a rich reading environment which inspires children to want to read.

We have a large variety of reading books which are taken from many different reading schemes and are carefully graded by reading levels known as book bands. Each book band has its own colour. The teacher will select the appropriate book band colour for your child and then children are able to choose a range of books from within this colour to enjoy reading at home (see Helping your child with Reading leaflet on website). When a teacher is certain that your child is reading confidently within a colour they will move your child on to another colour. Reading confidently is not just reading the words fluently but also understanding the text.

Our Reading curriculum includes;

  • Guided Reading – this takes place twice a week in every class
  • Hearing books read aloud on a regular basis
  • Home / school reading with children selecting their own choice of texts
  • Opportunities to practise reading aloud to helpers in school
  • Visiting our school Library once a week to borrow books and working in partnership with our local Yateley library
